Trees are responding so well to the hardware used in connecting structures to living trees that we are now in a time where treehouses are expanding out from our backyards and moving into public spaces; parks, schools, and work places. It is important to get more people into the trees so that we foster stewards who will protect and expand our cherished forest environments. Nelson became excited about treehouses at the age of 5 when his dad built him a tree fort behind the garage of their Ridgewood, New Jersey home, but it wasn't until 1987 that he built his first adult treehouse in his Colorado Springs backyard. He is a graduate of Colorado College in Colorado Springs. Pete Nelson is a designer and builder who has specialized in treehouse construction for over three decades. He has published six books on the subject, and hosted 11 seasons of Animal Planet’s hit television show, Treehouse Masters. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.

This is the 1st video in a series hosted by Treehouse Master, Pete Nelson, on how to build a safe treehouse platform using our Tree Fort Hardware System. In this video, Pete goes over the each of the hardware components in the system and their basic function. Later in the series he will go into specific installation instructions for each component. Our Tree Fort Hardware System (referred to as "Backyard Hardware" in this video series) is a simplified and more economical version of the standard & heavy duty treehouse hardware we use in larger builds. This Tree Fort Hardware System is designed for small scale builds, think: kid-scale tree forts, sunset decks or tree gazebos. NOTE: Pete refers to this system as the "backyard" treehouse hardware. This is the same as the "Tree Fort" Hardware seen on our website.
